How Much Does the Life in the UK Test Cost?
The Life in the UK test costs £50 per attempt. This fee is fixed and does not vary by location or time of day. You pay this fee each time you sit the test, whether it is your first attempt or a resit.
This fee covers the booking and administration of the test; it does not include the cost of the official handbook, transport to the test centre, or any preparation materials. Budget accordingly — thorough preparation that results in a first-time pass is always the most cost-effective approach.
There is no official concessionary rate or exemption from the £50 fee, regardless of income. Each resit costs the full £50. The best way to save money is to pass first time — which means thorough preparation.
How to Book the Life in the UK Test
Booking the test is done entirely online through the official UK government website. Here is the step-by-step process:
- Go to the official booking website at gov.uk/life-in-the-uk-test
- Create an account using your email address
- Enter your personal details (name, date of birth, nationality)
- Enter your visa or residence permit details
- Select your preferred test centre from the list of approved locations
- Choose an available date and time slot
- Pay the £50 fee by credit or debit card
- Receive a booking confirmation email with your appointment details
Test slots can fill up quickly at popular times and locations. If your preferred centre is fully booked, try nearby centres or book well in advance. Do not book until you are genuinely ready — but don't leave it too late either.
Finding a Test Centre
There are over 60 approved test centres across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Most cities and large towns have at least one test centre within reasonable travelling distance.
Test centres are typically located at:
- Colleges and further education institutions
- Testing provider offices (such as Pearson VUE centres)
- Community centres and civic buildings
Use the test centre search tool on gov.uk to find the nearest available centre to your home or workplace. You can filter by date and time availability.
What to Bring on Test Day
You must bring one acceptable form of photographic ID. The test centre will check your ID against your booking details before allowing you to sit the test. The only accepted forms of ID are:
- A valid passport (from any country)
- A Biometric Residence Permit (BRP)
No other forms of ID are accepted — driving licences, national identity cards from other countries, and utility bills will not be accepted. If you do not have acceptable ID on the day, you will not be permitted to take the test and will forfeit your booking fee.
What to Expect on Test Day
Arrive at the test centre at least 15 minutes before your scheduled time. Late arrivals will not be admitted once the test has started.
At the test centre:
- You will sign in and your ID will be verified
- Personal belongings (including your phone) must be left in a locker
- You will be shown to a computer terminal and given instructions
- The test has 24 multiple-choice questions to complete in 45 minutes
- You can review and change your answers before submitting
- Your result is displayed immediately after you submit
If you pass, you will receive an official certificate by post, typically within a few weeks. Keep this certificate safe — you will need it for your citizenship or settlement application. The certificate does not expire. For more on what the certificate means and how it is used, see our guide to the Life in the UK test.
Cancellation and Rescheduling
If you need to cancel or reschedule your test:
- You can reschedule free of charge if you give more than 3 days' notice
- Cancellations with more than 3 days' notice may be eligible for a partial refund (check current terms on gov.uk)
- If you fail the test and wish to resit, you must wait at least 7 days before rebooking
- There is no limit on the number of resits — but you pay £50 each time
